How Do You Find Affiliates That Actually Can Sell Your Digital Products?
Countless times we have seen people (and companies) asking how do you find affiliates? Then, the very common question always follows. I have tons of affiliates but we don't have any sales, what gives?
There is a myth and it just won't go away.
Just because you have affiliates, doesn't mean that you have affiliates that sell.
It is a flip on the other myth
You have placed an affiliate link on your sites, doesn't mean that you will get sales.
Whichever company that you will choose to place your digital product to sell on, most contain an affiliate program. Some might help you with contacting the affiliates, segmenting them, banning etc but ultimately it is up to you to actually acquire and maintain affiliates.
Just placing your digital product on a website generates sales?
We used Clickbank kinda exclusively because we knew it. But most companies are similar. After a week or two of our product being on their website we had loads of affiliates promoting our products.
Great.
This brought us:
- Backlinks
- A cool feeling (it is, people are going out of their way to sell your product)
- Some SEO love and traffic
- Very few sales
The negatives of all this?
- The amount of sales does not equal the amount of affiliates promoting your product
- The backlinks were iffy. Some were 1 page random words pages, some were free pages, others were redone articles that made no sense.
So why did this happen?
Well,
- Most affiliates don't make a lot of money with affiliate selling. Very few make that elusive and random number $10k/month.
- They all do the same thing, so they are battling with each other
- None bought the product so they didn't know what they were actually selling. So traffic is generated but because it wasn't segmented, filtered and highly probable, cold, it didn't convert
The question this generates is:
You did get sales, so how do you promote more sales?
We noticed that 3 affiliates were actually making the sales. So we helped them generate more.
And this is not just our secret. It is industry standard. Below, the techniques used to increase affiliate sales can be seen on all top affiliate products.
How do you find affiliates?
How do you find affiliates? You actually have to nurture them and form a relationship. Some of the top sellers on affiliate sites know the product owner or are very aware of the product itself.
They also do not go into promoting the product straight away.
As a product owner you must figure out first:
- Who your target audience is
- Where do they hang out and what type of programs do they use online- Youtube, Insta etc
- You need to have some credibility boosters- testimonials, badges, "as seen in/on", video testimonials etc
- How does your page convert?
- What are the keywords that people click on and are searching for
- What are your key metrics. So affiliates want to know one main fact- how many people click on your sales page then actually buy the product.
Why is this important.
Pro affiliates sell using PPC and their list- which they have taken time and reputation to build. They know that you are going to grab some of those buyers and place them on your own list.
And, they want to know how much spend they are going to have to allocate to your product. If your EPC is $1- meaning, if I spend $1 on a person that buys, I make $1 for that sale. So the higher the EPC, in general, is a must. but EPC is fluid- it changes- gets worse, gets better
So. Initially your sales page needs to convert- before you recruit anyone.
But. All this can only really be found out by you and by testing. It is very helpful because you get sales and you also increase your data and stats on those affiliate sites.
How do you find affiliates? Give them a tool kit
Half of affiliates will plug and play whatever you offer, the other half will adapt what you have to offer.
These things that you offer are of great importance because these are your sales materials. Your sales toolkit. What you have used to generate traffic that converts into sales. The materials?
They go on a separate page that is accessible to affiliates once they have signed up for your product. A savvy marketer will also try and get the email address of the affiliate to tell them of promotions, future products.
- Email system- usually 3-4 emails that are known to convert
- Banner ads
- Small square ads
- Facebook ads
- PPC average costs
- Demographic information
- A discount button
- Conversion rates
- Upsells- desirable to many affiliates
- How can they contact you
- Notes on custom sales pages if they deliver a certain amount of sales
- Custom sales percentages if they pass a certain amount of sales
- An affiliate "rules" area. Roughly stating what you do not want the affiliate to do. It would be things like you can not promote stating that you are the creator of the product. Or, where people can not sell.
How do you find affiliates? Talk
Like we said before, selling is usually a relationship- known people selling known products. But what if you don't have access to these special relationships?
Well, there are 3 ways that you can highlight your products
- Talk in forums where affiliates hang out. And this is the actual niche that you are thinking of. Affiliates gather information and they will discuss products within those niches. Conferences is also a good place to find people who are more inclined to sell your products
- Become an affiliate for a niche that you like. If you can generate sales for someone else and you are good at it then you go on their radar. You also generate your own list of buyers and interested parties. You are a "known"
- Start your own Facebook Group or some social group and then start to talk about the niche and products within it. Promote and compliment other peoples products. Then you can start sharing and promoting other peoples forums/ groups and social sites because, again, you are a known. You also have something that they like- an audience. If you have an audience then you have something that you can "trade with". If you have 100 subscribers then you can easily cross promote with a group that has 100-200 subscribers. Once more have been added to your subscribers you can go after higher subscriber lists.
How do you find affiliates? Time
Unfortunately the idea of how to find affiliates is based upon time. You have to give to get. And you have to prove that you have a sellable product.
Most of the overnight successes took many months to generate. One person made $102k in 24 hours and it was a big thing. Even went on TV and talked about it. When you read the fine print, the launch was actually 9 months in the making. How?
- They interacted in the community and made friends with lists- who then became the main affiliates
- They spent money to create a subscriber list
- They nurtured the list and made sure that it was responsive
But. Regardless of friends, connections...if your product is shabby then it creates refunds and lowers the chance of affiliates picking up your product the next time.
And...your sales page must convert.
Oooh...nearly forgot a really needed piece of advice:
- Offer a fair commission price. Commission structures are the best- sell more product get a better percentage back. A high priced product usually has less of a percentage but anything from $9-99 is 51% and above with 70% being standard. The higher the commission the more chance affiliates will pick it up. We have seen 10% for a $19 ebook...no-one will look at that. If you have back end products, additional products then the amount of money you will make only goes up- and you add people to your list. Some pro affiliates will not touch any product that is below $90+ sales price because the work that they will put in needs to be worth it. Therefore low sales prices and commissions actually bring in less pro affiliates. However it can also be a quick sell if someone has a content site.
